The High Chaparral television series, which originally aired on the NBC television network, enjoyed a run of 4 seasons on American primetime television. It ran for a total of 98 episodes and starred Leif Erickson as 'Big' John Cannon, Cameron Mitchell as Buck, and Mark Slade as Billy. It was a Western television series, in the same vein as its contemporaries of the time such as Bonanza and Gunsmoke. It also shared the same music composer as Bonanza (David Rose), and thus had common origins with this other Western epic.
The High Chaparral television series was based in Arizona, on a cattle ranch run by 'Big' John Cannon and his family. The timeline is approximately in the 1870s, which meant that the daily struggles were with the natural elements, as well as the native Apaches of the area. The story resolves around the Cannon family and their adventures in the Arizona territory, as well as their newfound (and originally hostile) neighbor Don Sebastian Montoya. The High Chaparral refers to the land which the Cannon family migrated to, and which is also the subject of dispute between the new settlers, and the native Apaches. In time, the Cannon family form an alliance with the Mexican Montoyas, and finally settle down in the High Chaparral.
Among the most famous of High Chaparral episodes were 'One Way or Other', 'Characters Behaving Badly', and 'Affairs of the Heart'. The high chaparral complete dvd set boxed is a treasure trove of this classic television series and relic of American culture, and contains all 4 seasons and 98 episodes of this amazing Western television series. Big John Cannon's character was as tough as one could get, while at the same time being the gentle family man. The High Chaparral's lead character could always be counted on to be perceptive about everything the situation called for, and he also took the rather unique stand (for people of that era) that extermination of the Apaches (and other natives) was wrong. Big John Cannon was also lucky enough to have a wife who genuinely loved him, and who would never fail to provide an alternative viewpoint to the one he held upon initially encountering a problem. Much of the High Chaparral's high drama could not have been possible if not for the dramatic differences between Big John Cannon and his wife Annalee's personalities playing themselves out.
To this day, the many fans of the High Chaparral still yearn for the good old days of its original screening, and in 2005 a reunion of the original cast of the High Chaparral was held. In fact, it was made known that there was a script ready for the fifth season of the High Chaparral (the blasphemy!), but the show had to be cancelled due to monetary concerns. The producer of the 4th and last season of the High Chaparral, Jim Schmerer, announced the titles of the five episodes of the High Chaparral scheduled for the 5th season, but had to be scrapped due to lack of funds: Reap the Whirlwind, The Scalp Hunter, San Juan Day, The Calling Card, and Judgement Day.
Today, 4 decades on, it is likely impossible that we will see any more of the High Chaparral television series.
